Are Designers Catching on to Plus Size??

According to my Marketing text book, designers are finally realizing that plus sized women like to be fashionable. Which is great news for us plus sized women!

But, most retailers are not realizing this fact. Some (it didn’t name the store) even go as far as only stocking 1 of each item above a size 10. Which, these of course are the first to sell out leaving their plus size customers without the fashionable clothing they desire.

Now, this isn’t going to be news to most of us. I know it’s not news to me! Even when I was no longer considered plus sized I still struggled to shop at stores that didn’t offer plus sized options.

My favorite store became my favorite store for this reason. While I don’t shop on the plus sized side anymore it’s almost like a comfort to know that it’s there. That if I need to go up a size I can. And I can feel stylish & beautiful. It’s like a safety net for me.

But, away from my fear of gaining all of my weight back & back to the issue of stores not stocking plus sized clothing!

I think it almost forces plus sized women to fall into a stereotype. Because we can’t find fashionable, affordable clothing we all tend to wear the same things. Yeah, we can all accessorize to our little hearts’ desire. But in the end we all still look the same. Plump. In pants that don’t fit right (too baggy in the thighs but too tight in the belly) In shirts that make us look like a slob (boxy, loose, just blah). We’ve all had that look. And it does nothing for our self esteem. NOTHING! It makes us feel worse.

And what would 75% of plus size women say they do when they feel horrible about they way they look in their clothes? I’m going to bet it’s not go to the gym so we can wear those cute clothes! We didn’t get to these sizes by going to the gym. We got to these sizes by eating our emotions, by binging after a horrible shopping experience (like when you stand in the middle of the mall & cry because no where sells your size).

Maybe it’s all a vicious ploy by plus size designers! If we feel cute in our clothes we’ll have more confidence & feel like we actually can lose the weight, so we’ll start to change our diet & exercise. And then, as time goes on we won’t need the plus sized clothing; we’ll need regular clothes. We’ll be able to shop at regular stores. Maybe, just maybe, plus sized clothing designers are making ugly clothes as a ploy to keep our weights up so we have low self esteem & continue to buy the crappy clothes.

Or maybe it’s just that not enough places have caught on to the fact that even if we’re plus sized we want to look & feel cute & sexy.
